With an impressive combination of creature comforts, on- and off-road performance, and operating efficiency, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV is a unique offering. It’s been more than a decade ago that GM axed Hummer, after it failed to find a buyer during the economic downturn for the troubled brand. The storied name returns as a Detroit-assembled GMC model, rather than a standalone brand, with the first Hummer EV model, the Hummer EV Edition 1, rolling out beginning in fall 2021.
That top-performing model offers three motors, an estimated 350-plus-mile range, a staggering 1,000 hp/11,500 lb-ft of torque, and a blistering 0-60 MPH in approximately three seconds.
At low speeds, the Hummer EV’s four-wheel steering, called CrabWalk by GMC, turns the rear wheels up to 10 degrees in either direction. This allows the truck to “traverse tight trails with a capability that no other truck in its segment can match,” according to the manufacturer.
Extract Mode raises ground clearance by lifting the adaptive air suspension up to 6” to conquer tough obstacles, such as fording deep water or traversing boulders. The new truck will come with specially designed 35” tires, but it can be fitted with 37” tires. Independent front and rear suspension promise both remarkable off-road handling and highway comfort. Optional front e-lockers and “virtual rear lockers” optimize off-road traction.
UltraVision allows up to 18 camera views, including forward- and rearward-facing waterproof underbody cameras that see beyond the skid plates to provide real-time views to pick the best line along the trail.
Pop the Top for Sunny-weather Fun!
The new Hummer offers what appears to be a mix of a targa roof in front and a t-roof for rear-seat passengers.
GM calls the new open-air feature “Infinity Roof and modular Sky Panels” create immersive open-air experience. The four roof panels and front I-bar can be stored in the power frunk, and then the power rear drop glass can be lowered.
If you’re ready to sign on the dotted line, you’ll have to wait. Reservations for the Hummer EV Edition1, with an MSRP starting at $112,595, are already full. It’s not clear when the next spot in the line will be available. Lesser models in the product lineup will feature a staggered release of fall 2022 (EV3X, starting at $99,995), spring 2023 (EV2X, starting at $89,995, and spring 2024 (EV2, $79,995) to round out the offerings.
