What to use
Disinfectant wipes work best in your car or SUV’s cabin. It is the cleaner most used by most automotive interiors today. All it takes is a quick wipe to clean, although soap and water work pretty well, too.
Be sure to spend extra time on the steering wheel. According to a study, a steering wheel can have four times the number of germs found on an average toilet seat! Because of this, we suggest using disinfectant wipes to clean all the surfaces on the steering wheel.
Clean the door and center console armrests, displays, cupholders, cubbies, air vents, and door “grab handles.”
Soap and water can rid surfaces of germs, refrain from scrubbing too hard, which can lead to removing some of the surface coatings and dyes used on many interiors of today’s vehicles.
What not to use
Using bleach or hydrogen peroxide on the vehicle’s interior is highly advised against, as these chemicals can damage the vinyl and plastics used in most modern vehicles.
Ammonia cleaning products should not be used either, which includes many glass cleaners, as ammonia breaks down the vinyl on the dashboard and can cause it to be sticky to the touch when subjected to heat and light. Moreover, anti-glare coatings are used on touch display screens, so glass cleaner should not be used on these screens because it can ruin that anti-glare coating.
Wash Your Hands!
The last and most important tip is to continually wash your hands, especially before and after cleaning your vehicle properly. If your hands are dirty, you are putting germs right back onto an already clean surface!
No amount of cleaning can guarantee that you won’t get sick, but effectively disinfecting your vehicles’ interior will help minimize that risk.
