The stadium above is missing something. Can you guess what that might be? If your answer is “fans,” you are right! The Major League Baseball season will begin soon enough, but sadly, without fans for the foreseeable future. Owners in the MLB have finalized a plan that will allow the 2020 season to start on the Fourth of July weekend, according to ESPN.
The season was set to start March 26, but it was delayed because of the novel coronavirus pandemic. The San Francisco Giants, and teams throughout the league, will be playing an 82-game regular season, which is just a bit more than half of the traditional 162-game schedule.
According to the plan owners have agreed to, spring training will begin early this month. Games would resume the fourth of July weekend without fans. Games would continue without fans in attendance until state legislation and health officials allow them.
The plan is contingent upon the Major League Baseball Players Association accepting the terms of the shortened season.
In a March agreement between players and owners, players received $170 million in an salary advance, and the Players Association agreed to not challenge if the owners decided to cancel the season. Now that the owners are willing to start the season in early July, thoughts are that the proposal will be accepted almost unanimously by the association.
The owners and association are focused on getting back on the field under conditions that prioritize the health and well-being of players and their families, coaches, umpires, team staff, and most importantly, FANS.
We are just as excited about the start of the start of the MLB season as you are. We cannot wait to watch the San Francisco Giants and root them on like before the pandemic!
