By now we all well know the 49ers promoted defensive line coach Jim Tomsula to head coach. Jim Tomsula has been with the team since 2007. But here are a few things you may not have known about him.
He previously served as the head coach of the 49ers
During the 2010 season, Mike Singletary was fired with only one game remaining. Jim Tomsula stepped up to coach the last game of the season in week 17, defeating the Arizona Cardinals 38-7.
He lived out of his car
Dreams don’t always come easy. According to a 2011 profile in The Press Democrat, then 29 year old Tomsula was sleeping in his red Caddy because he chose to volunteer as a coaching assistant for Division II Catawba College. His only means of income were obtained by selling rugs on straight commission making ends meet a challenge.
Intense is his “middle name”
Jim does not lack with an intense coaching style. This makes him a good choice for the team in Harbaugh’s departure. He is not concerned about perception as you can find him packing a wad of tobacco in his left cheek, sporting a nylon tracksuit … you wouldn’t give this guy a second look off the field. Quite frankly, no fame, no media attention – this is how he prefers it.
He has a boy named “Bear”
Jim Tomsula’s youngest son, James Bear Tomsula answers to “Bear”. Perhaps inspired by the legendary coach Bear Bryant. Or maybe he just wanted his kid to have the coolest name ever!
So whether you are a Tomsula fan or not, never judge until you know. He is a self made man, eager rookie head coach and has accepted a position that has offered no breaks along the way. Keeping his ambitions in mind he is sure to make the best of every situation thrown at him.
Peninsula loves the 49ers and all of us here are looking forward to a great season!
