2020 Best Eco-friendly Cars

If you’re shopping for a new vehicle, you may have wondered just how environmentally friendly your choices are.

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, or ACEEE, rates vehicles each year for their lowest environmental impact and assigns each a “Green Score.”

The most environmentally friendly vehicles in the 2020 model year are once again “electrified,” but for the 2020 model year, more gas/electric hybrid-powered cars made the list.

ACEEE attributes this in large part to improvements made to internal combustion engines that enable them to run cleaner and get better gas mileage, along with stricter tailpipe emissions standards and improvements in the production and distribution of gasoline. Below, we have listed and given a brief description of vehicles with the lowest environmental impact.

ACEE gives each vehicle a Green Score based on an environmental damage index (EDX), which reflects the cost to human health from air pollution associated with vehicle manufacturing, the production and distribution of fuel or electricity, and vehicle tailpipe emissions.

Each vehicle is given an overall green score that can be used to compare the relative environmental friendliness. These vehicles are expressed and ranked on a 100-point scale. Below are ACEEE’s Top 5 “Eco-Friendly” Vehicles available on the market with each vehicle’s green score and Environmental Damage Index (the closer to 0 the better).

5. Honda Insight Hybrid:

Green Score: 64/100

Environmental Damage Index: 0.77

4. Hyundai Ioniq Electric

Green Score: 65/100

Environmental Damage Index: 0.74

3. Toyota Prius Eco Hybrid

Green Score: 65/100

Environmental Damage Index: 0.73

2. Hyundai Ioniq Blue Hybrid

Green Score: 66/100

Environmental Damage Index: 0.72

1. Toyota Prius Prime Plug-in Hybrid

Green Score: 66/100

Environmental Damage Index: 0.72

Since not everyone necessarily wants or is able to own an electric car or a hybrid, the ACEEE identifies “greener” choices in each vehicle class. These include the Mitsubishi Mirage, Chevrolet Spark, Mazda MX-5 Miata, Ford Ranger, Chrysler 300, and the Chrysler Pacifica. Green Scores for all vehicles from the 2020 model year are available via the GreenerCars.org interactive database.
