Spring is just around the corner. If you are headed out of the Bay area for a Spring Break road trip, there are a few simple preparations that can keep you safe and out of trouble.
Under the Hood
Often times we leave it to the pros for any issues under the hood and never even take a look at what is going on until it is too late. Take a moment to pop the hood and check all fluids, including oil, coolant, brake fluid and windshield washer fluid. Check the air filter and battery while you are under there as well. Look for corrosion around your battery connections and carry jumper cables in case you find your battery needs a jumpstart.
Your owner’s manual is a great reference when it comes to proper tire pressure. It will tell you what the tire pressure should be – PSI. Make sure tires are properly inflated. That goes for the spare, too. Imagine the trouble this could save. Properly inflated tires will not only keep you safe on the road, they will save you on gas as well.
Inspect the tires to make sure there is enough tread. The old penny in the tread trick should work. Just hold the penny so that Lincoln’s head is upside down and facing you. If you can see his entire head, it’s time to head to your local tire shop.
Lights and Signals
Obviously proper lighting and signals will keep you safe on the road, but they are just one more reason why you won’t get a ticket. Inspect your headlights, taillights and signals to ensure they are in proper working order. Keep all lenses free from dirt that can make them dull.
At an absolute minimum, make sure you have the tools to change a tire. But also consider carrying a spare, be sure to have a full charged phone when traveling (cell phone charger or external battery) so you can call for help if you’re in a jam, drinking water, a gas can and a flashlight. It is not a bad idea to carry an emergency reflective triangle and a flare; especially useful if you will be traveling in the dark.
Also, don’t forget to take your license, proof of insurance and registration. You wouldn’t believe how often this is overlooked.
