At-home Workout Tips

You may feel you are stuck at home, with no way to work out and no equipment to use. Well, you are in luck! You don’t need a gym  ̶  or in most cases, even equipment  ̶  to effectively workout. You have to use your imagination and make the most of being safe at home instead of thinking you are “stuck at home.” Below, we have developed some tips that might come in handy when you are starting your workout from home routine.

Know Your Space

Make sure you evaluate your environment you plan to work out in, whether it’s your bedroom, driveway, living room, or garage; make sure the space is clear of any obstructions and has sufficient room for the activity of choice.

Warming Up and Cooling Down

In order to reduce the risk of injury, as with any physical activity, a proper warmup and cooldown is critical. A proper warmup includes more than just stretching. Good “blood-pumping” warmups include jumping jacks, air-boxing, and even high-knees. After warming up for 10-15 minutes, getting a good, deep stretch is very important before starting your actual workout.

After the workout, a dynamic cooldown is critical. A good cooldown includes walking and knee-raises. Stretching after a workout is key for injury-resistance and flexibility.

Hydrate

Drink water before, during, and after any type of workout to avoid cramps, cognitive issues, and even fatigue. If your exercise has a high sweat rate, consider a sports drink high in electrolytes.

Nutrition

One of the most commonly misunderstood aspects of working out is the nutrition aspect. Vitamin D, Calcium, iron, Vitamin C, and electrolytes play vital roles in avoiding injury and building strong muscles. With a proper nutritional diet in place, working from anywhere will give you the gains you are after.

Sleep

The proper amount of sleep is critical. Sleep affects healing, recovery, metabolism, muscle growth, and weight control. Getting too little sleep is bad for your body and even your mental health. Sleep, like nutrition, is overlooked, even when working out from home. Making sure you get proper amounts of both will give you the confidence it takes to stay disciplined in working out from home.
